In a world where love matters

At the time I lobbed it up, but the story of Thomas Beatie, the pregnant transgendered man,1 deserved more comment than I gave it, especially Beatie’s remarkable marriage, which I was reminded of while reading about Denise (born Donald) and Fran Brunner and their own concerns about the legal status of their marriage. There are many ways that love is tried, but surely it is strengthened most when it is

I agree with hilzoy.2

1 Beatie’s personal essay in The Advocate is good reading, by the way.

2 I wrote this post fragment in 2008. In 2010, Beatie gave birth to his third child; in 2012, he and his wife Nancy filed for divorce. The divorce was denied in April of this year on grounds that the state of Arizona doesn’t recognize their “same-sex marriage,” which is to say on grounds that it doesn’t recognize Beatie’s sex change. The court’s decision is pending appeal.
