The truest line about Arkansas in John Brandon’s Arkansas—a well-wrought crime novel (which I noticed in 2008 but only just this year got around to reading)—is about Little Rock:

Little Rock keeps embarrassing itself by trying to attract tourists, claiming to be a technological hub and cultural capital. Capital of what? The Northwestern Mid-South?
